The Ohio Academy of Audiology provides its members with the highest quality continuing education experiences from nationally known speakers. Our next conference is February 19-21, 2009 and will take place in Central Ohio.
Here is an example of such a program, from the Ohio Audiology Conference from Feb 23–25, 2007:
Four stars for the 2007 Ohio Audiology Conference… Advancing Audiology in Ohio! The biennial conference held this year at the Embassy Suites in Dublin, Ohio, welcomed highly respected researchers and practitioners with attendance topping 230. Registrants comments included “The OAC is always great but this is the best ever!” and “How does the committee top this OAC.”! On Friday, participants were invited to participate in two very unique workshops. Dr. Billy Martin and Dr. Deanna Meinke presented Dangerous Decibels: A Workshop for Prevention of NIHL in Kids of All Ages. This well attended workshop discussed the risk of NIHL in children, how early prevention and intervention can be successful in changing attitudes of children regarding noise exposure and the responsibilities of educators in preventing NIHL. Participants enjoyed this interactive session and agree that audiologists should also play a key role in educating children about the dangers of noise exposure. The second pre-conference workshop Precepting: The Opportunities-The Challenges presented by Dr. Sharon Lesner, Dr. Craig Newman and Dr. Sharon Sandridge discussed the change in the role of the audiology supervisor to a 4th year clinical preceptor. The shift in responsibility for clinical training was highlighted and ways to expand existing clinical education practices were discussed. During the Opening Session on Saturday morning, Karen Mitchell, President of the Ohio Academy of Audiology, welcomed participants to the Third Biennial Ohio Audiology Conference. Karen had the pleasure of introducing Paul Pessis, Au.D., President of the American Academy of Audiology as our keynote speaker. Dr. Pessis highlighted Ohio’s leadership role in the AAA and discussed the current direction for the Academy. The Academy also welcomed Kelly O’Reilly, Director of Governmental Affairs for the Governmental Policy Group, who discussed the successes and challenges the Ohio Speech and Hearing Governmental Affairs Coalition has faced in the past few years and the goals for the Coalition for the next year. The Opening Session concluded with the first presentation of Awards of the Academy. Helene Levenfus, Au.D., was presented with Honors of the Academy, Paula Webster, Au.D., was presented with the Clinical Excellence Award and Craig Newman, Ph.D., was presented with the Research Award. On Saturday participants enjoyed sessions by Dr. Pessis on Optimizing Health Insurance Opportunities, Dr. Robert Glaser and Dr. Robert Traynor on Strategic Management Planning, Dr. Kathleen Campbell on Current Perspectives in Ototoxicity and Otoprotective Agents to name just a few! Sunday’s sessions ended with the Great Debate entitled Medicaid: To Accept or Not Accept. A very lively session that had all the participants thinking about reimbursement and the services we provide to Medicaid recipients in Ohio. The Ohio Audiology Conference Planning Chairs would like to thank all speakers who presented at this year’s conference as well as the dedicated committee chairs and committee members who made this years conference another rousing success!
